Latest News about ‘The Crown Tundra’ and VGC

Today, it was announced on the official Pokémon YouTube channel that the second part of the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, The Crown Tundra, will be available on 22 October in the Americas / 23 October in Europe, Asia and Japan.

On this article, we will sum all we know for this second release, including returning Pokémon, new Galarian variants and other key features that can affect competitive VGC play in the near future! The format of VGC 2020 Series 6 has been announced to expire on 31 October, so, although still unconfirmed, it is very likely that the Series 7 of VGC 2020 will be in play in November and include the new features available within The Crown Tundra!

Returning Pokémon

Due to the footage shown in the pre-release trailers that have aired since the Expansion Passes were announced, the following Pokémon and their evolutionary families are expected to be obtainable in the new areas added with The Crown Tundra:

Some of these Pokémon have dominated past VGC metagames. Be especially cautious of the new Dynamax capabilities for the bulky classic Dragonite, the heavyweight Metagross and the all-mighty Garchomp!

Legendary Pokémon

However, these are not the only Pokémon returning… All Legendary Pokémon from past generations have been announced to be available through the adventure of The Crown Tundra and the special new feature, the Dynamax Adventures!

Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion were already available by transferring them from the old games through Pokémon HOME. Now, they can be catched in the Nintendo Switch games! The following Pokémon will join them and may tentatively be immediately playable in VGC! Will Zapdos, Heatran, Cresselia and the Alolan guardians maintain their dominance from old metagames?

New Pokémon and forms

Some other new Pokémon will be introduced in this second part of the Expansion Pass. Take a look at them!

Galarian Slowking

A new evolution of Galarian Slowpoke will be introduced in The Crown Tundra. Galarian Slowking is a dual Poison/Psychic-type Pokémon and has the new Curious Medicine Ability, which resets the allies’ stat changes when it enters the field; it may be useful to reverse the secondary effects of some Max Moves! It also gets access to its signature move, Eerie Spell, a Psychic-type special move which deals damage and extracts 3 PP from the move the target last used.

Regieleki

The first of the new legendary titans introduced in The Crown Tundra. Regieleki is an Electric-type Pokémon and has the new Transistor Ability, whose effect is still unknown! Its signature move, Thunder Cage, is an Electric-type special move which deals damage to the target, traps it and causes residual damage for four or five turns. Ideal for those trapping and eroding strategies!

Regidrago

The other legendary titan introduced in The Crown Tundra. Regidrago is a Dragon-type Pokémon and has the new Dragon’s Maw Ability, whose effect is still unknown! Its signature move, Dragon Energy, is a Dragon-type move which deals more damage the more HP the user has remaining. Take huge advantages before it wears away!

Galarian Articuno

The regional variant of the classic icy bird, available in The Crown Tundra. Galarian Articuno is a dual Psychic/Flying-type Pokémon and has the Competitive Ability to boost the power of its special moves! Its signature move, Freezing Glare, is a Psychic-type special move which deals damage and may freeze the target. A pitch-perfect mixture of the huge Psychic power and the most feared feature of Ice-type moves!

Galarian Zapdos

The regional variant of the classic electric bird, available in The Crown Tundra. Galarian Zapdos is a dual Fighting/Flying-type Pokémon and has the Defiant Ability to boost the power of its physical moves! Its signature move, Thunderous Kick, is a Fighting-type physical move which deals damage and lowers the target’s Defense. Take down those bulky walls with it!

Galarian Moltres

The regional variant of the classic flaming bird, available in The Crown Tundra. Galarian Moltres is a dual Dark/Flying-type Pokémon and has the Berserk Ability to boost its power when damaged! Its signature move, Fiery Wrath, is a Dark-type special move which deals damage and may make the target flinch. Wreak havoc with this malevolent creature’s fire-like aura!

New item: the Ability Patch

Finally, a very relevant item for the VGC community has been revealed. The Ability Patch will be an enhanced version of the Ability Capsule and will change a Pokémon’s Ability to its Hidden Ability!

With this new item, several Pokémon obtain previously unavailable options. Prepare for the Galarian fossils acting as new sweepers in the sandstorms, with Sand Rush Dracovish and Dracozolt, and a possible viable use of Slush Rush Arctovish and Arctozolt as hailstorm abusers.

But also prepare for the likes of long forgotten Flame Body Heatran, Defiant Incarnate Tornadus, or Sheer Force Incarnate Landorus, and in the long term Multiscale Lugia, Regenerator Ho-Oh or Telepathy Dialga.

What's next?

The second Pokémon DLC is around the corner, and with it a major shake-up of the VGC scene… Let’s await the announcement of the Series 7 ruleset for now.

In the meantime, the action continues with Series 6 in October with the 7th and 8th events of the Spanish grassroots circuit, the Circuito Galar. Players from everywhere can participate! Make sure to stay connected on Twitter for all updates and events!
