Hi! I’m Víctor Medina, also known as Torviv. I’m a Spanish VGC player who started to play in 2014. My biggest accomplishments were made in the Senior Division:
- Top 8 at the 2018 World Championships
- Top 4 at the 2018 European International Championships (London, Dec 2017)
- Winner of the 2017 Madrid Special Event
This team report will show you the team I played in the Qualifier #1 of the VR Circuit: Winter Series, in which I achieved first place (and also a top 4 in the Battle Train #2).
Shoutouts to Carlos Cabal (Wekj) and Ignacio Castellano (Gotheru) since they helped me build this team.
Teambuilding process
The main idea of this team was to do a Zacian composition that could face the worst match-ups, such as Venusaur + Groudon or Tornadus + Kyogre.
The main core became Zacian + Thundurus. They work incredibly well together. Thundurus can put up pressure on Intimidate users, such as Incineroar and Landorus while it boosts Zacian with Max Airstream and Max Knuckle. Thundurus also helped against Kyogre teams since it carried an Assault Vest.
Having these two, I realised that Landorus (Therian Forme) synergised very well with the idea of the team. Landorus was able to spam Earhquake next to Thundurus and it was great against Groudon + Venusaur compositions.
Once the main core of the team was set, I focused on other teams that could potentially give mine problems. Those were teams with a lot of speed control (usually Tailwind and Trick Room) and with a lot of offensive power (Psychic spam). So I needed my last three Pokémon to be bulkier.
I noticed that Gigantamax Lapras could do a great job setting up the screens for the main core of the team, as well as giving it offensive coverage with Ice and Water types. Amoonguss was the fifth to join the ensemble; this was due to its ability to redirect attacks from Lapras or Zacian and to pressure a lot of opponents with a possible Max Airstream + Spore.
The last slot was the hardest to choose. I needed a Dark type for the Psychic spam match-up. The most usual thing would have been to put an Incineroar or an Urshifu on this slot, but Umbreon fitted here perfectly and was a perfect counter of most Calyrex and Groudon teams.
The Team
Thundurus (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
EVs: 36 HP / 148 Atk / 28 Def / 44 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
– Wild Charge
– Fly
– Superpower
– Foul Play
Thundurus was a great Pokémon to Dynamax. The Assault Vest variant was the chosen one for the popularity of special attacker threats to Thundurus, like Kyogre or Nihilego. For the moves I chose Foul Play instead of Lash Out in order not to rely on the Dynamax usage that much.
148 Atk Thundurus Max Lightning vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Kyogre: 206-246 (117 – 139.7%) — guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Thundurus Max Lightning vs. 36 HP / 28 Def Dynamax Thundurus: 169-200 (53.1 – 62.8%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(It withstands Max Airstream + Max Lightning from a Life Orb Thundurus)
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Thundurus Max Lightning vs. 36 HP / 28 Def Dynamax Thundurus: 253-300 (79.5 – 94.3%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(It also withstands +1 Life Orb-boosted Max Lightning)
252 Atk Thundurus Max Airstream vs. 36 HP / 28 Def Dynamax Thundurus: 65-77 (20.4 – 24.2%) — guaranteed 5HKO
+1 252 Atk Thundurus Max Lightning vs. 36 HP / 28 Def Dynamax Thundurus: 195-231 (61.3 – 72.6%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(It withstands a Max Airstream + a +1 Max Lightning from non-Life Orb variant, although it is a rather unfavourable roll if it is at +1 for both moves)
252+ SpA Life Orb Transistor Regieleki Electroweb vs. 36 HP / 44 SpD Assault Vest Dynamax Thundurus: 48-58 (15 – 18.2%) — possible 6HKO
252+ SpA Mystic Water Kyogre Max Geyser vs. 36 HP / 44 SpD Assault Vest Dynamax Thundurus in Rain: 213-252 (66.9 – 79.2%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(It withstands Electroweb + Max Geyser)
Zacian-Crowned @ Rusted Sword
Ability: Intrepid Sword
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 108 Atk / 4 Def / 68 SpD / 76 Spe
Adamant Nature
– Sacred Sword
– Behemoth Blade
– Substitute
– Protect
This Zacian set was a risky option for the tournament. The Speed is set to be one point lower than that of Thundurus in order to use a Max Knuckle + Behemoth Blade combo that could cause many problems to certain teams. The investment in bulk was really important for certain games, and gave me the surprise factor that I needed in an open teamsheet tournament.
108+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Behemoth Blade vs. 12 HP / 68 Def Xerneas: 204-242 (100.4 – 119.2%) — guaranteed OHKO
+1 108+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Sacred Sword vs. 4 HP / 4 Def Kartana: 150-178 (111.1 – 131.8%) — guaranteed OHKO
+1 108+ Atk Zacian-Crowned Sacred Sword vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Incineroar: 204-242 (100.9 – 119.8%) — guaranteed OHKO
(In order to use Max Knuckle + Sacred Sword, or just with the Substitute)
252+ Atk Groudon Precipice Blades vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Zacian-Crowned: 168-198 (84.4 – 99.4%) — guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Transistor Regieleki Electroweb vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned: 42-49 (21.1 – 24.6%) — 6.3% chance to OHKO
(This goes for the Sub 😛 )
252+ SpA Magnet Transistor Regieleki Max Lightning [Thunder] vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned: 165-195 (82.9 – 97.9%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(Timid Life Orb makes a little less damage)
252 SpA Life Orb Calyrex-Shadow Max Quake vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned: 161-192 (80.9 – 96.4%) — guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Mystic Water Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned in Rain: 160-190 (80.4 – 95.4%) — guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned in Rain: 133-157 (66.8 – 78.8%) — guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Magnet Transistor Regieleki Electroweb vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned: 43-52 (21.6 – 26.1%) — 37.5% chance to OHKO
(Magnet-boosted Electroweb + Water Spout: 24.2% KO… RIP)
252 SpA Transistor Regieleki Electroweb vs. 252 HP / 68 SpD Zacian-Crowned: 37-45 (18.5 – 22.6%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(If Regieleki holds a Focus Sash, it is just 3.125% KO)
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 236 Atk / 20 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
– Swords Dance
– Rock Slide
– Fly
– Earthquake
This Landorus is a really standard choice in these kinds of teams. This Pokémon functions really well with the boosts by Thundurus or with the help of Lapras and Amoonguss to set up his own boosts with Swords Dance. Fly also gave the chance to Dynamax and use a powerful Flying-type atack.
+2 252+ SpA Fairy Aura Xerneas Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 20 SpD Dynamax Landorus-Therian: 277-327 (84.4 – 99.6%) — guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Mystic Water Kyogre Origin Pulse vs. +1 0 HP / 20 SpD Dynamax Landorus-Therian in Rain: 296-350 (90.2 – 106.7%) — 37.5% chance to OHKO
Lapras-Gmax @ Life Orb
Ability: Water Absorb
Level: 50
EVs: 140 HP / 4 Def / 244 SpA / 4 SpD / 116 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
– Hydro Pump
– Protect
– Freeze-Dry
– Thunder
Lapras is designed to be used Gigantamaxed. It is a great support for the rest of the team, giving them Aurora Veil and Electric Terrain with G-Max Resonance and Max Lightning. It also deals a lot of damage with Life Orb and is able to wall Pokémon such as Kyogre or Groudon.
+1 252 Atk Zacian-Crowned Behemoth Blade vs. 140 HP / 0 Def Gigantamax Lapras: 374-444 (83.8 – 99.5%) — guaranteed 2HKO
(An example… xD)
+1 252 Atk Thundurus Max Lightning vs. 140 HP / 0 Def Gigantamax Lapras: 368-434 (82.5 – 97.3%) — guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Kyogre Max Lightning vs. 140 HP / 0 SpD Gigantamax Lapras: 186-220 (41.7 – 49.3%) — guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 140 HP / 0 SpD Water Absorb Lapras in Rain: 0 (0%) – 0 (0%)
252 SpA Magnet Transistor Regieleki Max Lightning vs. 140 HP / 0 SpD Gigantamax Lapras: 374-444 (83.8 – 99.5%) — guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Transistor Regieleki Electroweb vs. 140 HP / 0 SpD Gigantamax Lapras: 120-143 (26.9 – 32%) — guaranteed 4HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Thunder vs. 140 HP / 0 SpD Gigantamax Lapras: 240-284 (53.8 – 63.6%) — guaranteed 2HKO
Amoonguss @ Focus Sash
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
– Pollen Puff
– Spore
– Rage Powder
– Protect
I chose a classic Amoonguss set. The Speed investment is really important for this team to deal with low-speed compositions, such as Trick Room cores. It can also help redirecting attacks intended for Lapras or Zacian with Rage Powder, and heal its partners with Pollen Puff.
Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 156 Def / 108 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
– Yawn
– Moonlight
– Foul Play
– Snarl
Umbreon was clearly the MVP for this tournament. This addition was incredible for the team. Umbreon can control both physical and special attackers with Foul Play and Snarl while healing itself with Moonlight. Yawn was the last move to be added and it helps Umbreon to put pressure into the enemy team; in my opinion, without this move, Umbreon can be extremely passive in certain match-ups.
+1 252+ Atk Groudon Max Quake vs. 244 HP / 156+ Def Umbreon: 160-189 (79.6 – 94%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Calyrex-Ice Max Hailstorm vs. 244 HP / 156+ Def Umbreon: 148-175 (73.6 – 87%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 180+ Atk Solgaleo Max Knuckle vs. 244 HP / 156+ Def Umbreon: 172-204 (85.5 – 101.4%) — 6.3% chance to OHKO
+2 100+ Atk Solgaleo Max Steelspike vs. 244 HP / 156+ Def Umbreon: 166-196 (82.5 – 97.5%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 180+ Atk Life Orb Solgaleo Max Knuckle vs. 244 HP / 156+ Def Umbreon: 169-200 (84 – 99.5%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Mystic Water Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 244 HP / 108 SpD Umbreon in Rain: 156-184 (77.6 – 91.5%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Life Orb Transistor Regieleki Max Lightning [Thunder] vs. 244 HP / 108 SpD Umbreon: 156-185 (77.6 – 92%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Charizard-Gmax G-Max Wildfire [Burn Up] vs. 244 HP / 108 SpD Umbreon in Sun: 153-181 (76.1 – 90%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and Wildfire damage
252 SpA Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) [Max HP (176) Water Spout] vs. 244 HP / 108 SpD Umbreon in Rain: 118-139 (58.7 – 69.1%) — guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252 SpA Kyogre Water Spout (139 BP) [164 HP Water Spout] vs. 244 HP / 108 SpD Umbreon in Rain: 72-85 (35.8 – 42.2%) — 92.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
(After a Snarl; the rolls are the same for 163 and 161 HP. Leftovers recover 12 HP; If Umbreon has 201 HP left [213 HP total], 28.125% of 2HKO… RIP)
252 SpA Transistor Regieleki Electroweb vs. 244 HP / 108 SpD Umbreon: 33-39 (16.4 – 19.4%) — possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

Conclusions
I felt very underprepared going into this tournament, I cannot believe I was able to win. I think that the Zacian + Thundurus + Landorus core is very strong right now and has a lot of potential that had not been discovered yet. Shoutouts to everyone who supported me on stream!
