Overview
The 2023 Hong Kong Nationals Qualifiers is an official Online Competition featuring double battles, and is region-locked. It is the fifth Online Competition in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games for players in Hong Kong, and the first one relevant in the VGC circuit for them.
Online Competitions are usually a part of the casual gameplay, but they have been featured in the official circuit for some years now. Region-locked Online Competitions are something new to Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, and they have been chosen to act as qualifiers to the National Championships in South East Asia or even as National Championships themselves.
Previous editions of the Hong Kong National Championships were open to everyone. This is the first time that a qualifying method has been implemented.
A little bit of history
Hong Kong has been one of the regions on the official TPC circuit since June 2020, and it was part of the Oceania region of the official TPCI circuit before that. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, Special Events, and both TPCI-era and current TPC-era National Championships. Hong Kong’s greatest VGC success was the top 16 achieved by Edward Cheung Ka Hin at the 2016 World Championships.
The most recent tournament held in Hong Kong was the 2022 Hong Kong National Championships, played in Kowloon Bay with the Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield VGC Series 12 ruleset in June 2022. The finals saw Hongkonger Pan Si Ming defeat fellow compatriot Ma Chun Yeung to achieve his first major title.
American James Evans, the 2018 Senior Division World Champion, defeated Brazilian Gabriel Agati in the NAIC finals.
