Overview
The Sydney Regionals is an official TPCI Regional-level event for Pokémon VGC, TCG and Pokémon GO. It is the second and last Regionals of the 2023 season in the Oceanian circuit, and also the second and last in the NAIC travel award race. This event was originally going to take place on 27-28 May, but was rescheduled on 21 February to its final date in April.
The ruleset is to be defined, as the current VGC Regulation Set B has an end date of 31 March, and it will be played using open team lists.
A little bit of history
Australia has been part of the Oceania region of the official TPCI circuit since they were established. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, old-era National Championships and all editions of OCIC since its inception in 2017. Australia’s greatest VGC success is Nicholas Kan‘s 2017 Junior Division World Championship win, while in the Masters Division Sam Pandelis reached that same year the finals at the 2017 World Championships.
The most recent tournament held in Australia was the 2023 Perth Regionals, played with the VGC Regulation Set B in March 2023. The finals saw Briton Taran Birdee defeat Australian Alister Sandover.
The last time there was an event in Sydney was the 2019 Sydney Regionals, played in Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon with the VGC19 Ultra Series ruleset in May 2022. The finals saw 2017 North America International Champion Christopher Kan defeat fellow Australian Henry Rich.
