Overview
The San Antonio Regional Championships is an official TPCi Regional-level event for Pokémon VGC, TCG and Pokémon GO. It is the fifth Regional-level event of the 2024 season in the North American circuit.
The ruleset is VGC Regulation Set E, and it is played using open team lists. The Temporary Post-Release Restriction Clause is under effect for this Regional, banning any new content from the recently released The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC Part 2: The Indigo Disk.
A little bit of history
The United States has been part of the North America region of the official TPCi circuit since the very beginning, also being home to the TPCi headquarters. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, old-era National Championships, all editions of the North America International Championships and most World Championships (only excluding 2013, 2022 and 2023). The United States’ greatest VGC success are the four World Championship wins achieved by Ray Rizzo (2010, 2011 and 2012) and Wolfe Glick (2016), not even counting being the home country of 6 Senior Division and 5 Junior Division World Champions too.
The most recent tournament held in the United States was the 2024 Sacramento Regional, played in the VGC Regulation Set E in October 2023. The finals saw American Michael Zhang defeat 5-time Regional Champion Riley Factura to win his first Regional Championship title!
The last time there was an event in Texas was the 2020 Dallas Regional, played in Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield with the VGC Series 2 ruleset in January 2020. The finals saw 2016 United States National finalist Aaron Traylor defeat Chinese Wang Bingjie to win his second Regional Championship title!
American James Evans, the 2018 Senior Division World Champion, defeated Brazilian Gabriel Agati in the NAIC finals.
Sign-up instructions
Sign-ups for the event are done through RK9 Labs platform, and you will first need to set up your RK9 profile and have a Play! Pokémon Player ID. All players must comply with the Play! Pokémon COVID-19 Protocols.
Sign-ups are $65 (+ $5.36 tax) and they open on 18 October at 7 pm CDT (19 October at 00:00 UTC). There are 500 spots for Masters players and 48 spots for Senior and Junior players.
- A second wave of sign-ups was later announced to open on 2 November at 7 pm CDT (3 November at 00:00 UTC). There are 64 new spots for Masters players.
- A third wave of sign-ups was later announced to open on 30 November at 7 pm CST (1 December at 01:00 UTC). This wave only includes cancelled spots, confirmed to be 20 spots for Masters players and 8 spots for Senior and Junior players. However, due to a mistake by Rk9, the wave opened an hour earlier than announced.
After these three waves, the organizer announced that waves of sign-ups would open as cancelled spots became available:
- A fourth wave of sign-ups opened on 2 December at 12:33 pm CST (18:33 UTC). This wave included 5 restored spots for Masters players.
- A fifth wave of sign-ups opened on 8 December at 1:42 pm CST (19:42 UTC). This wave included 8 restored spots for Masters players.
- A sixth wave of sign-ups opened on 9 December at 1:50 pm CST (19:50 UTC). This wave included 4 restored spots for Masters players and 8 for Senior and Junior players.
If the player cap is not reached, sign-ups close 2 hours before the event starts.
For registered players, team lists must be submitted 1 hour before the event starts, by 16 December at 7:30 am CST (13:30 UTC).
Spectator passes are $20 (+ $1.65 tax) and can be purchased here. They include a side-event ticket.
